Pap Smear in Durban
What Is A Pap Smear
A Pap smear is a simple step towards your health. I want to take a moment to reassure and empower all the incredible women out there about the importance of regular pap smears. A pap smear is a quick and simple procedure that plays a crucial role in detecting cervical abnormalities early, including pre-cancerous changes and cervical cancer.
Pap Smear Examination
Here’s what to expect. You’ll be asked to undress from the waist down and lie on the examination table. A sheet will be provided for your comfort and privacy.
I will gently insert a speculum into the vagina, which helps to open the vaginal walls. This might feel a little uncomfortable, but it shouldn’t be painful.
Once the cervix is visible, a small soft brush or spatula is used to collect a few cells from the surface of the cervix. This part only takes a few seconds. The procedure is over before you know it. You may experience slight spotting or discomfort, but most women are able to return to their daily activities immediately.
Pap Smear After Examination
The collected cells are sent to a lab to be examined under a microscope. I’ll follow up with you once the results are ready and we’ll discuss any next steps if needed.
Remember, regular pap smears are one of the best ways to protect your health. Early detection can save lives and this simple procedure is a proactive step in ensuring your well being.
What age should a woman get a Pap smear?
There is no need to screen younger than 21. If you are younger than 30, you can likely be tested for cervical cancer every 3 years if your Pap test results are normal. Starting at age 30, have a Pap test with an HPV test (co-test) every 5 years. This should be done until age 65.
When is the best time to get a Pap smear?
Try to schedule your Pap test for the middle of your menstrual cycle – between 10 to 20 days after the first day of your period. Don’t use a vaginal douche, vaginal medications or contraceptive (spermicidal) creams, foams or jellies (unless your doctor has told you to).
